Jamaican Sorrel Drink

Jamaican Sorrel Drink von IslandtoDoor Schweiz

(Family recipe for 5 liters)

Every family has its own recipe – that's how we love Sorrel at our big celebration!

Ingredients (for approx. 5 liters)

  • 3 Pack Natural Sorrel (dried)
  • 6 large pieces of ginger (each at least 10–12 cm, unpeeled, thoroughly washed and roughly crushed)
  • 10 carnations (whole)
  • 3 Cinnamon Leaves
  • 5 liters of water (plus a little extra for topping up)
  • Sugar to taste
  • Optional: Rum (for adults)

preparation

1. Prepare sorrel and spices:

Briefly rinse the natural sorrel. Thoroughly wash the unpeeled ginger and roughly crush it with a mortar and pestle or kitchen mallet.

2. Cooking:

Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Add sorrel, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon leaves.

Let everything boil vigorously for 20 minutes .

If water evaporates, simply add more – the ingredients should always be well covered.

3. Let it steep:
Remove the pot from the heat, put the lid on and let it sit for at least 6 hours (preferably overnight).

4. Strain & sweeten:
Pour everything through a fine sieve and sweeten to taste.

5. Chill & serve:
Chill thoroughly in the refrigerator. Adults can add rum to taste.

Tip:
Serve with ice cubes.

Important:
Each sorrel is unique – some like it hotter, others sweeter, or with more cloves. This is our family version for big celebrations.
