Jamaican Curry Goat

Jamaican Curry Goat

Jamaican Curry Goat is a true centerpiece of Caribbean cuisine – boldly spiced, slowly braised and full of flavor.

Ingredients (for 4-6 people):

  • 1 kg goat meat, cut into pieces

  • 2 tbsp Jamaican curry powder (IslandtoDoor)

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped

  • 1 medium onion, diced

  • 1 spring onion, sliced

  • 1 Scotch Bonnet chili (or to taste), chopped

  • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 500 ml water or broth

  • 2 medium-sized potatoes, diced

  • 1 carrot, sliced

  • 1 tsp allspice (optional)

  • 1 tbsp vinegar or lime juice (for marinating)

Preparation:

  1. Marinate: Mix the goat meat with curry powder, turmeric, salt, pepper, garlic, onions, spring onions, chili, and thyme. Drizzle with vinegar or lime juice and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours (preferably overnight).
  2. Sear: Heat the oil in a large pot and sear the marinated meat until lightly browned.
  3. Braising: Add water or broth, reduce heat and simmer covered for about 1.5 – 2 hours, until the meat is tender.
  4. Vegetables & Finale: Add potatoes, carrots and allspice and simmer for another 20 minutes, until the vegetables are soft and the sauce has thickened.

Serve & enjoy! Best served with rice and peas or steamed white rice.
